How a digital lab in Puntland is changing lives

When Y-Peer opened the doors to its new Digital Accessibility Lab in Garowe, no one expected how quickly it would become more than just a classroom. By the end of 2024, it had already trained over 120 young people — many of them women, and at least 30 with disabilities.

Abdiraman Ahmed Farah, 21, came to the Lab unsure of what he could do. “I couldn’t even use a computer before,” he says. “Now I believe I can do many things. The training didn’t just teach me how to use technology — it helped me see myself differently. I know I can be part of my community and give something back.”

Osman Jama, who manages the program, sees this as just the beginning. “We train around 120 people every quarter,” he explains. “But it’s not just about digital skills. It’s about confidence, inclusion, and showing young people that there is a path forward — no matter where they’re starting from.”

Naima Mohamed, another recent graduate, had a different journey. Coming from a poor family that couldn’t afford to send her to school, she was fortunate to have the opportunity to join the Lab’s three-month computer literacy course. “I learned English, computers, and math,” she shares. “But I also took classes on gender-based violence and life skills. I feel prepared now. I’m going to apply for jobs in restaurants, and I believe I can support my family.”

For many like Naima and Abdiraman, the Lab is more than a training center. “It’s a launchpad, one that’s helping shape a new generation of confident, capable, and connected young Somalis,” says Osman.

Launched in May 2024 with UNDP support, the Digital Accessibility Lab provides internet, accessible computers, and tools like a Braille printer. It empowers marginalized groups — such as persons with disabilities, women, and youth — by offering key skills and knowledge to overcome barriers and access better job opportunities.
